 Life Writing - Symposium

Life Writing Symposium
Date: 13 - 15 June 2006
Location: Conference Centre, Flinders University

Details

The Flinders Humanities Research Centre will hold a Symposium for the "Life Writing" research group. The group conceives of this title in its broadest terms, and is interested in biography, autobiography, memoir, biographically-driven fiction or poetry, travel writing, and biographical writing forms in new or alternative media.

The special guests of the Symposium are Sidonie Smith (Professor of English and Women's Studies, University of Michigan) and Kay Schaffer (Professor of Gender Studies, University of Adelaide).

This is planned as a working symposium, in which everyone will take an active part in discussion. All papers will be posted on the Life Writng section of the Flinders Humanities Research Centre website in advance of the symposium, so that attendees will have a chance to read and think about them beforehand. The symposium format is designed to allow for maximum discussion: papers will not be "read" as such at the symposium, but rather summarised by the author, and then discussed in detail by the group.

Timeline:

Call for Ideas: Expressions of interest in participating in the Life Writing Symposium are very welcome up to Friday, 16 December 2005.

Call for Abstracts: Please submit 1000 word abstracts to the Centre by Monday, 20 March 2006. Papers for the symposium will be selected on the basis of these abstracts by a panel of senior academic staff who will not be submitting papers themselves.Advice on acceptance will be circulated by Monday, 27 March 2006.

Full Papers: Full papers are due on Monday, 22 May 2006, to allow approximately three weeks for symposium members to read and become familiar with all of the papers.
